UPDATE CRITICAL

Well not all that critical although I do realize that I’m going to have to post more photos to get more comments!

Today I finished setting up Darwin’s room/ Office. I’ve got no idea how we are going to fit a crib in there with the built in bunk bed taking up most of the floor space (I can’t see him sleeping in the bunk until he’s about 4 it’s quite a climb) but we will work it out. At least the room looks great!

I’m slowly getting tireder each afternoon, I think the move and waking thrice a night to feed Darwin is catching up with me. I plan to take arvo naps this coming week to prepare for Mum’s visit.

I love our little loud Gemini darling, he already has such a character. He is extremely expressive when he poops, letting out comical grunts then flashing huge smiles even what seem to be belly laughs. Truly ahead of his time! (of course we think he is a genius)

OK it’s time to be totally open and honest. I’ve decided to not use cloth nappies, AHH! I know, I have been dreading letting out my secret but the time had come. I’ve gathered many excuses to use to justify my decision.

1. I have no idea how someone can do that much laundry! Darwin poops like 20 times a day and I’m sorry but I can’t see myself doing 2-3 loads of laundry every day (nappies and clothes) especially when the nappies need to be washed twice thats like 5-6 wash cycles.

2. I plan to be back at work for 2-3 shifts a week as of July 20th, who do you think will have to then do loads of laundry when they get home from a days work? Jason will have Darwin and work from home so I wouldn’t expect him to do it anyway.

3. I tried a cloth nappy on the little guy and he looked like butternut (you know that bell shape) he would have to get a S top and wear XL pants. I also tried a Happy Heineys which was too big. At the rate he’s growing I’d have to buy extra so I wouldn’t have to wash 10,000 times a day then buy the next size up in a few weeks.

The list goes on, of course there are still all the very good reasons to stick with cloth (not that I started in the first place which may have been my problem). Environmentally is a wonderful idea although I think I’d like to take the recycling route as apposed…disposables are just easier, it is true and I would never have known this had I not been a Mum.

Nuff said. Sorry. I still feel bad. Stupid environment, I almost wish everything was plastic but looked, smelt and felt really real so we didn’t have to worry about wrecking it.

  1. Ruthie sorry to hear about the cloth nappy thing but don’t feel bad it’s not for everyone. At the newborn stage I was washing diapers every other day we had 3 dozen flat diapers and about 8 covers and we used the diapers for EVERTHING (burp cloth, changing pad) and newborns need to be changed A LOT . Somehow we were able to get away with doing clothes less often but no matter how you look at it cloth is extra work. Hey I even used a diaper service for a month around the holidays to keep me on track (did get 2 weeks as a gift). Mostly I just felt it was important to me and besides I had diapers and covers to get us through Kawika’s first 6 months so gosh darn it I was going to use these things. It got easier, I developed a system, Kawika needed to be changed less, and we ended up using disposables at least part of the time. So you know whatever works for you guys! And hey you may decide to try it again in a few months I know several moms who’ve done that. If you think you might want to sell your diaper stash let me know HHs are popular with the CDing moms I hang with and I’m sure I could find some buyers.

Sorry that was a long one but you WANTED comments.

  2. Oh yeah and the bubble but thing – so get what you mean there. I do have some All-In-Ones that are a bit trimmer than most cloth diapers but still! When I’ve got Kawika in cloth he wears his 12-18 months shorts/pants, when he’s in disposables he can STILL fit in his 6-12 moths shorts (dude is 20 months! He’s so got the Stone ass – or lack there of).

More importantly please don’t beat your self up about this, you gave it a try, you’ve got better things to do like kiss that baby!

    (there that’s 2 comments ;))

  3. Congrats to both you and Jason on the cute health little Stone addition..Have you tried to see if they have diaper liners to use. I used cloth diapers as well and made it thru the first few months with a diaper service as well. Much better for the enviroment as well as the pocketbook.
Can’t wait to see Darwin in November.

  4. Ruthie,

Don’t be so hard on yourself. We used disposables on Oscar for the first couple of months for the same reasons you are saying: clothes don’t fit, too much work, have to change to often. Looks like plucka duck! We only used cloth fulltime at about 3 months. I must say though we have saved loads of money not having to buy nappies every week. We have 3 dozen and only wash every 3 days, as changing slows down once they get a bit bigger. 6-10 a day. dont beat yourself up you can only do what suits you as a family.
    Still love you loads. xxxooo
